I contribute some of my experiences for special car rental.
I needed a strong and reliable 4x4 car for my tour. After long search the only company who had one without the necessary driver is the ADA Tunisie.
I rented a Nissan Pickup with carryboy, 3200ccm diesel, that was a blast in the rock desert.
Unfortunately the long wheelbase is not helpful on sand dunes and I missed the differential lock, which is a must in the desert but it was fine for low speed offroad driving.
The consumption was very good, under 9 liter/100 km, which is surprising, I used 4x4 and the technical low gears frequently on tracks.
I you want to drive on red/yellow roads on the official map, a regular family car is enough, you do not have any traffic advantage with larger car like in Europe. If you want a self contined tour, the pickup is the best choice.
The employees of the company try to ask you for 10 euro or similar amount for taxi if they deliver the car to hotel or for gasolin if you leave the car on airport, so the regular friendly baksish negotiation is in process:-)
