I was used to take ferry from Genoa but last summer I've tried the Civitavechia port (Roma) another 250 extra miles from Genoa and I will definitly do it again the ferry terminal was so clean and well maintained as it is not a freight port. Half price compared to Genoa and the crossing was fastest (dont really like to be on board).
The funny thing about this is that we've met Tunisian going to Genoa to catch their ferry at 18h ours was at 23h30 and guess what we were first at Tunis!!!!! They've sweard next year they'll be definitly going to Civitavechia!
