My husband is Tunisian and all his life he drank the tap water unless they were outside the house, and sometimes they would buy bottled water just for a new bottle to refill in the house. But when he returned and had been gone 5 years and used to he water here in the US, he drank the tap water from Tunisia and got soooo sick we were in the Taufiq Hospital for 3 days and a 500 US dollar bill for the stay. Needless to say, anywhere you go your body doesnt have those same immunities as the locals, no matter how developed the country. I have to agree with those who say never drink tap water on any trip outside your home country. My husband gets sick ever single visit when he drinks the tap water. I also heard that people in Tunisia have higher rates of kidney stones because of the high mineral content of the water, although it would take some time to develop that condition.
