I totally agree that you should stick to the tourist areas, I recently returned from a week in Sfax (not a tourist place) and I'm not joking when I say that at times I was scared (even though my fella was very protective). If I had got into trouble I don't know how I would have survived, no-one seemed to speak english & I was stared at as if I was an alien. One time my fella went to get something from a shop & left me sat on a bench, he was gone for half an hour & I was totally stranded, I didn't know where I was & had no money in my pocket. Thankfully he returned full of apologies (he bumped into a mate & got talking) Please be very careful, let your family/friends know exactly where you are staying and send a text regularly to let them know you are ok.
