Default Tunis exhibit honours great man

An exhibit which pays tribute to a great 14th century Tunisian visionary has been opened in Tunis.

The country's culture minister Mohamed El Aziz Ben Achour and the secretary of state in charge of European affairs at the ministry of foreign affairs, Hatem Ben Salem, attended the event, reports Tunisia Online.

Dubbed "Ibn Khaldoun and the Mediterranean in the 14th century", the exhibit is a tribute to Mr Khaldoun and will run until the end of January 2007.

The National Library in Tunis is the site of the display, which has been described by Mr Achour as "a source of pride for all Tunisians".

President Ben Ali has dedicated 2006 to the memory of Mr Khaldoun and thousands of visitors are expected to flock to Tunis to see the exhibit.

Once it has run its course in Tunisia, the Ibn Khaldoun and the Mediterranean in the 14th Century exhibit will make its way to the US.

It will be on display in New York for a period of time, at the request of the United Nations' secretary general Kofi Annan.
