Tunisians have been led by president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in celebrating National Tree Day in the country.
The president planted a tree at the Montplaisir Japanese garden in Tunis to mark the occasion, which also acts as the beginning for a national forestation campaign, reports TAP.
Mr Ben Ali was joined by youth organisations and members of the public as he planted a Japanese tree in the garden.
Official statistics for the 2005 to 2006 season show that the amount of forest coverage in Tunisia reached 12.5 per cent, compared to 12.3 per cent the year before.
The president was also given detailed information on the progress currently being made on a pilot project aimed at preserving current forests and creating a new 60,000 hectare site.
Mr Ben Ali was full of praise for the work done during the last season, in which Tunisia reached a national average of 13.85 square-metres of green space per person.
He also called upon the people of Tunisia to rally behind the effort and help to improve those figures for the coming season.
