A Tunisian researcher from the University of Sfax has been honoured by a prestigious French science magazine.
Sami Ayadi, who specialises in environmental biotechnology, was awarded top prize in the field of environmental studies by the publication La Recherche.
He was recognised for his research into the natural recycling of toxic residue usually created as a result of the olive oil industry.
Mr Ayadi had an abundance of material to work with as Tunisia is one of the world's largest olive oil producers.
He has managed to discover a process which turns the toxic residue into an energy source known as biogas.
The process also creates liquid compost which is used as a fertiliser and for irrigation.
