Tunisia has reached a cooperative deal with France on the peaceful use of nuclear energy as it seeks to pursue a civilian nuclear programme.
According to the People's Daily Online, the two countries have agreed to work together to develop nuclear technology for peaceful use in the desalinisation of water and the generation of power.
The agreement heralds a new stage of nuclear research and development in Tunisia, whose petroleum resources are somewhat lacking.
Indeed Tunisia sees the exploitation of nuclear energy as an important step forward, as it looks to renewable energy sources as an alternative to fossil fuels.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria have also shown an interest in developing nuclear power, chiefly for water desalination purposes. The United Arab Emirates has similar plans, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The IAEA has confirmed that is has held preliminary discussions with the governments of these countries, including the Tunisian government, and that it will offer help with studies into the possible creation of nuclear power plants through its technical advisory programme.
