Maghreb Minerals has announced that it has been awarded four exploration permits for the Zaghouan fluorite district of Tunisia.
The company, which is listed on the AIM market in London, said in a statement that the permits represent a "significant expansion" in the North African country for the base and precious metal deposits business.
"The resumption of fluorite mining in Tunisia, represents a significant opportunity for import substitution in the country and has the support of the government and the domestic end user," said Gordon Riddler, executive chairman of Maghreb Minerals.
Undefined mineral resources of 4.8 million tonnes are said to be covered by the four permits, as well as 1.2 million tonnes of mineral reserves of fluorite.
Mr Riddler said that the permits offer Maghreb Minerals the opportunity to become a "significant industrial mineral producer" as well as presenting the "potential for the discovery of additional fluorite, lead and zinc resources".
Maghreb Minerals is also active in the neighbouring North African country of Algeria, where it explores for gold and gold-copper polymetallic mineralization.
