There are gays and lesbains in Tunisia and I have even met a few gay Tunisians myself. However though not aggressivly persecuted it is not generally accepted and you certainly will not find the equivalent gay clubs like you would in other places.
If you wish to go with your boyfriend girlfriend to Tunisia for a romantic holiday i am sure it is fine but would be very reticent to go there looking for love as you may meet the wrong kind of people and I cerntainly would not kiss in the street I mean my wife doesn't kiss me the street so two guys/girls could cause some problems. |

i quite agree.
in any country one has to respect their customs.having been to several arab countries it makes me angry that many europeans go topless and wear very skimpy clothes.is it any wonder we get such bad press.

I think gays and lesbians are quite accepted in most countries. however, gays and lesbian should at least familiarize the customs of that country like Tunisia before publicly exposing their "gayness and or lesbian" selves.

i totally agree and would suggest if you want to display your love with your gay partner to do that ONLY in private...such activity isnt acceptable in a conservative country like tunisia.
i also agree about western tourists, when i was there last time a whole group of british guys were walking the streets of monastir without a shirt (just shorts) and my hubby just looked and said to me - no tunisian would do that. :-) |

Hi all, i agree with you it is not socially accepted here in Tunisia although no doubt there are plenty you wouldnt see it openly in the street, although Tunisia is becoming more modernized its not quite up to beat.
I understand what you mean about the westerners wearing skimpy clothes and if you visit any country you should take in their culture and have respect, however i live here in Sousse and i can reassure you that i see a lot of tunisians wearing no shirts lol and also a lot of girls that do not dress accordingly!! as a british expat living here i have adjusted my ways to respect the culture but that doesnt mean to say i have to change completely but i will still wear my bikini on the beach ha ha |

I agree with all the above.. Its difficult though as a tourist it would not really matter i have spoken to many a tourist and they are gay or lesbian but its rare to see it publically unlike england. I have also learnt to respect the country and religion but i cant change completly but luckly my fiance excepts im english and so does hie family although some of the older women give me disgusted looks when i go on the balcony hanging out the washing in a skirt and little top its just to hot thogh i will have to be more careful this summer as i do live behind the souk in sahoul and very rearly see touists there unless it is a fri sat or sun xx
