Default treats to take for the locals

We always try to take something with us that the local population find hard to get or expensive to buy, It works for bartering when shopping also as a nice treat for the hard working staff on small wages. What do you suggest for us to take along to Tunisia.

Default RE: treats to take for the locals

I always bring loads of chocolate tons of it (in large bars) which takes the brain work out of gifts when i go to peoples houses.

Strangely if you know a tunisian clothes are expensive however I would suggest this for somone you know I always have a long list of clothes to be brought with me when I go out every couple of months.

Anything other than sweets etc runs the risk of insulting as its not like say Kenya for example where children are in rapture for a pen/pencilcase. Unless your after larger priced items for example a large rug then then I would say mobile phones are the most expensive thing in Tunisia or electronic items as the import tax is huge so if you have some recent unused handsets that may cut it.

Hope that helps I am sure that others will make better suggestions.

As i am muslim I cannot really say that LOL

Quite a few Tunisians like a drink but at the end of the day I would prefer other forms of trade as you never know if the guy you offer it to is religious and might take offence.

However your right wiskey is expensive there but is also a pain to carry about.

chocolate/sweets usually go down well, as do el-cheapo £25 DVD players, mp3 players / digital cameras etc.(though local prices are now coming down).

Easter eggs are outrageously expensive there, but I guess only expats would want those!
