Just had my car MOT'd for another year - total cost 19.800 dinars (compare this to the UK!) and now apart from issuing an MOT certificate, they also issue a window sticker.

Default I agree

I am married to a Tunisian, and we live in the states. I have been to Tunisia 2 times and drove there. I find what you are saying to be quiet true. In the states "bad driving" is unexpected so it causes accidents, but in Tunsia its expected so you are always on guard and it makes the unsafe situation actually safe. I do find it funny that the parking areas are the way they are, but thats another discussion.

Driving in Tunisia sounds very inexpensive. I looked at you money exchange for dinars to US dollars. And those prices for a rented car are great. The lowest car rental here are $35 to $40 per day. I always go on-line for the best deals. Websites I use are expedia.com and travelocity.com.

These are the things I remember about driving in Tunisia:

Was in Hammamet and saw a young man on a scooter, so busy oggling some girls that he ran into the back of a taxi - no one was hurt, everyone stopped and laughed and shouted comments at him to keep his eyes on the road next time.

Double parking on street corners in Tunis.

Being a passenger in a car and twice, on different journeys, being stopped by the police for speeding. The first time we bribed our way out of it by paying 5TD but the second time, the policeman took my husband to the police car and sat with him for ages, talking about life in England and then gave him some advice about how to live his life before sending us on our way

Driving slowly through a village up on the Cap Bon as the children were coming out of school - they ran alongside the car wanting to know where we came from and what were we doing there.

I agree with those posts about expecting anything - I just can't get my head around what's meant to happen on roundabouts because who stops where and when seems so random. My husband won't let me drive anymore

Hi sb, Mabrouk & congrats to your hubby - driving here is still like the whacky races sometimes! They started to replace the traffic lights with roundabouts and that has made such a difference - it's actually a bit quieter - before they all used to toot their horns for you to move before the lights had even changed. Massive improvements here with the new roads too - it's all really taking great shape.

Hi all, the first time I drove in Tunisia I took 2 wing mirrors off other cars!! It was more scary than taking my test! Must say the roads have improved immensely since 1995 the first time I drove out there. Congrats to your hubby sb x
