my one piece of advice if your driving inland (apart from watch out for animals and people because they wont watch out for you!) - dont buy the fuel in the cans from the side of the road!

Let me guess, this must be the algerian petrol that my sister's bf put in his car a few weeks ago. After that he had nothing but trouble with it.

When I've driven in the south, I've always filled up from the side of the road with Libyan petrol (photos on gallery!) I was told that the Libyans trade the petrol and electrical goods for food, fruit, etc. They say it has no impurities - it certainly is cheap and seems to last longer than the usual petrol from petrol stations which can be hard to find down south. No damaging effects - so far!!

We had lots of problems with our hire car after filling up with this - luckily one of Atefs uncles has a garage in their village and was only too willing to help us out - he went as far as to drain the petrol out, so we filled up at a filling station and everything was fine after that...maybe coincidence..

When I go to Tunisian I am considering hiring a car for my time there. From Jan til March,. Any idea how much this might cost?
I'm going to brave the bad , mad world of they busy roads.. LOL
If I remember correctly Essem, did you say I just take my English driving licence with me to Tunisia, and I can use that to drive. If I hire a car, do I have to organise insurance on the car? Or do the company I hire it from organise this ?
Thanks

Hi Kezza,

Yes you need your English driving licence and the car hire firm will usually include insurance in the cost of the hire. When you've decided, let me know your dates and I'll find you a great quote. x
