Default Mashed Up Yellow Taxi's

I have been in many yellow taxis over the years but something is not quite right, there should be a law enforcement on all mashed up cars that no longer function the way that they are supposed to, they should be m.o.t on a regular basis.
I know that these taxi's have a living but don't you think if Tunisia is to be promoted all over the world that something needs to be done now for the safety for all , you, me, our kids, our grandkids, tourists and the future generation.

Are the taxis really that bad? I am a fairly nervous passenger anyway.

Hi Ninikins,

Hope that you are in good health !
No please ninikin you really don't have to be nervous, the taxis are ok after a while you just get used to them and besides it really does depend on where you are staying in Tunisia, for example the taxis in Tunis are not the same as in Nabeul, the taxis in Nabeul are nearly all a bit should i say tired, maybe the window dont open or there is no seat belt, but please don't be nervous, you will be fine.................

I would think that there are certain things that they have to have for safety reasons? Do they have to go through inspections? Just curious because I would think that they would.

there is the m.o.t for cars there but alot of drivers are not bothered to fix any smaches till the mot is up for renewal,by the way there is alot of reckless drivers, that 's why alot of peaple stick to the old cars to drive in toun because if any body get his car bumped so he will not feel sorry for the damage to the car,the bran new cars always are seen only in the nice suburbs or in the out skirt of the capital tunis

Default Taxi's with character

See I Like to think of the battered taxi's as part of Tunisia's charm. I stayed a lot in Hammamet and I have had some wicked laughs with the taxi drivers. I remember one driver in particular was telling us a story he forgot to hold on to the wheel and I had to grab it and steer. It was all good fun though, I love it

You it doesn't seem to matter where you go but the taxi drivers always seem to give you a thrilling ride. I remember one time I was scared to death. They seem to squeeze their way into places that I would never think you could get a car through.

Hi,

I must agree, that not all of the taxis, but there were some taxis that were driving around badly damaged & to be honest you really did wonder how they managed to get from A to B in it!! However, I didn't give it much thought because the taxis are so cheap & when you think of it how can they afford to pay for any repairs when they are charging very little for your journey.
I once took a taxi from Hammamet to Tunis, it took only 35 minutes (high speed driving!) & it cost no more than £3 & I even got a large packet of sweets from the driver for my walk around Tunis!!!
However, I did see a few crazy drivers on my visit, but then we do get crazy drivers everywhere, but yes you would think that if the car is quite badly damaged then it shouldn't be classed as road worthy & fail the mot, but I think their laws are far more relaxed as to what they class as safe!!!

jools.

Hi Jools,

Hope that this message reaches you in good health !
I actually think that the taxi in which you travel in must be extremley safe no matter what, i would rather pay that littlre bit extra and have a taxi that i know is road worthy, dont get me wrong i know that no matter what car you are in an accident can happen, but i'm talking about the actual car itself.
I always like to think that when i'm travelling with my son or grandaughter that they are in a safe car with seat belts..............
My son loves to be driven in Tunisia as he don't like seat belts and frankly nor do i but i do like to be safe.......................................
