Troglodytes?

This is the first time I am hearing about the cave homes. I will have to head over to the gallery and see the pictures. I think that these would be different and interesting to see.

Hi, I'm hoping to drive down just after the New Year as it's one place I haven't visited yet. I reckon it will be a shade warmer that H. Sousse!!!

Just arrived back from trip to the south and pleased to say I visited Matmata for the first time. I travelled from Djerba to Medenine (this is the long way!) up over the mountains to Toujane where the views are breathtaking. Then on to Matmata to see the troglodyte houses, visit the museum and visit the Star Wars set. On the way back (the short way) via Matmata Nouvelle, I passed loads of these cave type homes, one even had pillars outside of the entrance (only in Tunisia!). Then on to Mereth and then Djorf where I took the short ferry crossing back to Ajim in Djerba.

Hi sb123, it was good to see but wouldn't rush back - the small village of Toujane just before Matmata on the mountain road is really quaint and picturesque.

Yes cant say that i enjoy travelling round tunisia when we go on holiday as we go in august and its too hot.I think it was about 8 years ago when i last went to matmata.El Jem was the most recent site seeing i have done quite fancy the catacoombs in sousse though has anybody done that.

Hi Essem! I went to your picture gallery, and boy did you do great pictures. The coffee house, wedding, and musicians. The wedding party was nothing but happy faces. It must be nice to know so many wonderful people. I enjoyed looking at the mint tea and cup on the plate. Keep up the good work - they are gorgeous!

Yes, there are still people living in caves in Matmata although most families now also have a house above ground. Some families use the caves during the summer because the temperature is a constant 20ish degrees Centigrade.
As far as I know the Arabs drove the original inhabitants the Berbers south into the mountains where they carved these caves for protection.
