US travel market analyst iExplore has revealed that the Tunisian tourist industry is thriving.
Most popular with European travellers, Tunisia is given an edge on the competition with its low prices and favourable exchange rates – and by the diversity of desirable consumables once tourists arrive, including rugs, mirrors, slippers and jewellery, all sold in the famous Tunis medina.
iExplore.com particularly recommends Tunisia's Jebel Ichkeul National Park and trips to Djerba and the desert region of the Chott El Jerid.
Tunisia's strong performance is mirrored by that of close regional neighbour Morocco, while the whole African continent is growing steadily more popular among American travellers, iExplore reveals.
Egypt has topped the list of favourite tourist destinations for both 2005 and 2006 with its world-famous ancient pyramids, excellent diving and opportunities for adventurous desert exploration, while South Africa pulled in third and Tanzania sixth among the top ten destination's for iExplore's "adventure and experiential travellers" looking for new terrain and new thrills.
Kenya, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia have also all been able to increase their market share among American travellers – so the continent's travel future is bright.
