The promotion of tourism is one of the top priorities for any ambassador but their method of promoting it varies widely from country to country. Probably, one of the best ways to attract Korean tourists would be sending travel agents to their country so they can come up with travel packages that Koreans would enjoy.
Tunisian Ambassador to Seoul Moncef Baati used this method by arranging a trip to Tunisia for major Korean tourist agencies last month with the help of Turkish Airlines and Atlantis Voyage, a Tunisian travel agency.
A team consisting of 16 men, mostly travel agents, went to two Hammamet and Sousse, the two Tunisian cities famous as tourist destinations, via Turkey. They conducted a kind of field research on how to create tour packages for Koreans.
The travel agencies include Hanjin Travel, Lotte Tours, Hana Tour, Nice Trip, Koryo Tour, Euro Tour, Columbus Travel and Mode Tour.
``Tunisia is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime,’’ Chun Young-shin, the assistant general manager of Hanjin Travel, who joined the trip, said. ``But I think it will take quite some time for Tunisia to fully develop itself as real tourist destination with tourism infrastructure.’’
Other participants in the trip echoed the same view of Chun by saying that Tunisia has potential as a tourist destination but it needs to develop more facilities and other things such as a direct flight.
``The growth rate of Korean tourists to Africa is outstanding. For example, about 1,500 Koreans visited Africa on package trips in 2006, more than three times the number in 2005,’’ Oh Seong-min, the manager of Mode Tour, said.
But he noted that Tunisia has a long way to go before becoming a tourist destination for Koreans due to the lack of information.
To have this feedback from the travelers, the ambassador invited them last Friday to his residence over dinner.
``We will learn from what you saw and felt in Tunisia in terms of developing tourism,’’ the ambassador said. ``The trip was the first arranged by the Tunisian Embassy and we plan a second trip soon.’’
After hearing the feedback, the ambassador said he was sure that he will see more and more Koreans visiting his country as Tunisia offers cultural and sports tourism.
