The ninth month of the Islamic calendar is here and thus Muslims and some partners of Muslims fast for the month.
This means no eating or drinking or bonking or swearing from sunrise to sunset. This is called sawm which means to refrain so refain from the bad things and be a nicer person to yourself and everyone else. This is also a holy month so make sure to stick to your prayers and learn more about you faith.
For people visiting Tunisia during this time bear this in mind as you sup a lovely cool clear thirst quenching bottle of water in front Tunisians. Its not so much insulting but more like torture!
There is also many special prayers and events during ramadan a good place to find out more is here
I just got off the phone from the wife and moaned about feeling so hungry and having to work the same as I would any other day.
Apparently many Tunisians take time off during the month (especially when ramadan falls in the summer) and also many businesses close early circa 2pm as everyone is simply so knackered in the time up to evening prayer and then if needs be open till late after as everyones sleeping patterns change a bit.
Hold this in mind if you have to conduct business during this month!
Hi kris, i am not muslim, nor have i converted but i am doing Ramadan with my boyfried and it is so hard, i am so hungry!!! he is working but finishes at 3.00 pm. We then still have to wait to eat at 7.14 pm, its certainly not getting any easier although the atmosphere here is starting to change a little as the week goes past, apparently the ceebrations start on the 3rd week, so will keep everyone posted!!! for now i will just keep waiting all day for my food and drink.
Oh and because i am not working at the moment and am in the house all day on my own it is so hard not to have a sneaky drink, but wallah i have not as yet!! although nearly did yesterday and my boyfriend walked through the door the same time as i was about to open the fridge! do i feel better for it was the question when he saw what i was doing! quite simply NO.
Just have to say, congrats to you and your wife, Kris for such a great site...I too can't belive I didn't find it sooner....just stumbled upon it while looking for Tunisan Ramadan recepies.
I'm an Australian, married to a Tunisian man, living here in Sunny Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where we met 7 years ago...now there's a story to tell !
But for now, I'm glad found this site.....Ramadan is now a time I look forward to rather than dread...one thing about Ramadan in Saudi is that our working hours are less, all the restaurants are closed until just before the ifthar prayer and smoking, drinking and eating is prohibited in public.......makes fasting much easier !
Although I have not converted, I usually fast each Ramadan, except when I was pregnant......but can't say that it get's easier each year...especially while the temperature here is still around 38 degrees....thirst is what I struggle with the most !
This year my "nanny/home helper" is away for the next 3 weeks, so all the cooking & cleaning is left for me and my sister inlaw ...shorba...brik...macarona...cous cous...slata mishwaya.....home made hobes every night.........*sigh*.......1 week down, 3 weeks to go !
I talked to my fiance the other day and he said "Ramadan started" (as if I didn't know, our wedding didn't work out because the authorities disqualified my papers, then he wanted me to come back as quickly as possible, and after I booked a ticket he called back and said "oh no it's ramadan, we can't get married" I know people getting married during ramadan, but not where he lives apaprently...)and I said "Yes, I know". " I can't eat or drink" he said, "Yes, I know" I said. "What are you eating today?" he said. "Well, some dates, maybe chicken..." "Any cous-cous?".. what's this, "food ****"? He can't eat so he wants to hear all about my meals... I was not well that day (still not) and all I ended up eating was ham sandwiches, which I don't think would have impressed him much!
Sorry to be so nosy but why did the authoities disqualify your papers, me and my boyfriend are preparing for the embassy and i am dreading it, we have discussed marriage but the whole thing here in tunisia scares me! ideally i want to get married in the UK and so hesitant to marry here, although my boyfriend says we can still marry in the UK aswell, but i have been trying to find out how this is possible, sorry to go off subject, if you message me it would be great thanks.
Don't worry about your papers; I'm Swedish and apparently the demands differ. I have seen the British site on Tunisia.com and it contains great info for you. I contacted the Tunisian Embassy here and they gave clear instructions. Once I got to Tunisia the authorities there also gave clear instructions - unfortunately, they were not the same! But, now I know what they want where we are going to be married. As far as where to marry - Tunisian authorities apparently do not always accept weddings abroad. If a Tunisian woman marries an Englishman, for example, in England, she won't be seen as married in Tunisia - and as we know they are not big on people just living together there... I am also planning a small ceremony here, once he get's here (insha'allah) because I want a Christian ceremony also, plus I can't bring my guests to Tunisia. My church is fine with just one of us being a Christian. By the way, have you seen the MSN site Girlfriends of Tunisians that someone recommended here earlier? Contact them, you can only join after contacting Jane, the manager, and you will have loads of British ladies to chat to about weddings and relationships in general.
kellyc, if you are interested in the girfriends of Tunisians site I can send you an invitation e-mail, if you'll give me your address, or you can just contact them as I wrote above.
I can not believe I am going to Tunisian in Sept, and I'm going to have to wait so long during the day before I can 'bonk' (as Kris puts it) with my fella ! Gutted. wait weeks to see him, then only get limited time in the bedroom with him.
I've agreed to 'try' my hardest at Ramadan..The food for me wont be too much of a problem, (because I work shifts and eat at all different times of the day/night - so often go without food during the day)
It's the drink that I am going to find a problem, especially if the weather in Sept is still very hot, I will really need water....
I have told my boyfriend, I can't make any promises. That I can only try my hardest. I am there with him for two weeks. So even if I only manage a week, i've given it my best shot.. And I know he appreciates it.
