Hi Rachel,

Now I am concerned about my birth certificate. I have got a copy of the original an dit is dated 10th October 2007. I was under the impression that as long as it was within 3 months of marriage this would be ok?? Does this mean I need to obtain a further one???

Thanks.

Hi Gina,

Your birth certificate normally needs to be dated within 21 days of getting married, the certificate of no impediment and such are valid for 3 months, but the birth certificate is a time sensitive do***ent, it also may depend on the area where you are getting married as to the time i.e. sometimes 15 days, the Embassy do advise 21 days.

Default Hi

Umm yep you will need to get a new birth certificate, one of the things unfortunately most people experience problems with is the silly time period of the do***ents.

I was told 14 days was the age limit 6 days before I was due to go over thankfully the folks in the Norwich registry office let me come in out of hours to collect the certificate.

Get your fiancee to go to to the registry office and ask them :-)

The marriage is legal here in the UK whether you go to the embassy and have them send it here or not.

I didnt get the BC legalised, just got it translated in to French for 10 dinar and it was fine.

Hi ya, I’ll post separately regarding the translator as I can’t find her phone number/address. She’s based not too far from Citè Riydah, Sousse, I thought I put her details on here, but I can’t find anything at the moment. If you go on my profile and click ‘find all post by Bigbrother’ you might find it there. I’ll check later for it.
I got married at the end of December and got two birth certificates as I read somewhere that two were needed, got the first one in the October and then the other one in the November, can’t remember exactly now. I know about the 21 days thing validity. I ended up only needing the one.
When I got my certificate of no impediment I was told by my local registrar that the certificate was valid for 6 months and that was in 2005. May be its now 3 months. I didn’t know about the Common Wealth Office and didn’t go there with my birth certificate. Once I got my birth certificate translated in Sousse, went back a few days later to pick it up, the translator said her colleague in the same office was a registrar, so we got married there the following week. You would probably need to find a reputable translator, ours must’ve been as there was no issues with my birth certificate.
I know you can get your birth certificate translated at the Embassy, but I opted not too as it would’ve cost about 70 dinar. It’s very confusing when you hear different things. The only thing I can think of is if you get married in a Municipal Office they may want to see the legalised certificate and very recent birth certificates?

I got married in a municiplity (Beni Khiar) and my normal birth cert was fine, it didnt need to be legaslised. It has to be a certified translator and I have attached a list of certified translators to this (i hope), i used the one in Hammamet, and it was ready within a matter of hours and cost 10 dinar.

Sorry for state of doc, it didnt translfer from a pdf very well...if you need one in tunis PM me and i will give you those seperately!

...Ok just tried to upload and a word doc is too big....anyone who wants can pm me and i will give you the list

Hi,

So Nicola, you used your normal birth certificate not a recent one? I know that the Embassy tell you now to have a birth certificate that is dated within 21 days and like Kris said his was needed with a much shorter date than that.

I must say it is very confusing when so many people tell you different things, I definately think the best thing is to go to your local municipality or get your hubby 2 be too, just to make sure. My wedding takes place on the 17th May 2008 inshallah and its taking so much planning as its such a big do were holding in fact too much planning!! Were getting married in a venue with the registrar attending the venue for the signing of the contract when I went to the Embassy last month they did stress the birth certificate being dated within 21 days. Its definately a worry when you have all the family flying over for the 'big day' and were mixing the two traditions (seemed an easy thing to plan at first) - I hate to think of my father walking me down the aisle on the day and then it not going ahead because of the do***ents eeeks!

I dont suppose any one knows the prices of cars to rent for the wedding, Im really being spoilt for my wedding day and now theres a big discussion over renting limousines or mercedes, you think it would be easy for me to arrange living here but it really isnt, Kris how did you do it hahaha!! I've got most things from my wedding dress, the rings to the venue and caterer all paid for but these little things are doing my head in!!

oh kelly thats sounds so good that you've not had to compramise on anything just because your getting married over there! I'm so jealous!! No i guess it all depends on the individual, we did what was best for us and that was our commitment to each other its not like i have a big family or can even uphold family tradition, so when i did was sign the contract and well its our 1 year anniversary today and well i'm planning our renew here in england later next year and hopefully i'll be able to get my parents to be behave like adults but hey that might be asking too much!!

I must say from when we signed our contract, at the embassy when applyin for the non impediment she told me about the birth certifacte being recent but it wasnt for them it was for the actual contract and I got my original tranlsated and they accepted that so like you say everyone gets told different things as i used my original and may i add only copy, oh no sorry i got another copy for the visa and they kept that too!!

but i wouldn't like to leave anything to chance, and kell i dont think you've got too much worry bout from the sounds of it you have a huge family backing and i'm sure they wouldn't see anything go wrong for you, its your day after all

Gina, here below are the details for the interpretor in Sousse where I got my birth certificate translated. She speaks excellent English.

Maitre Ben Hamouda Emna
Interprete Assemente
14 Avenue de la republic
Immeuble Gealem
Sousse
Tel : 216 73 220 931

Emna is located in the same office as a registrar (she was when we got married) and it made the whole process very easy.

Also, when we got my husbands Bulletin 3 and Birth Certificate translated into English, it was another colleague, round the corner who Emna referred us to.

Hope this helps. Good luck Gina.
